The Tibet Autonomous Region is composed of one city and six prefectures, namely Lhasa City, Qamdo Prefecture, Shannan Prefecture, Xigaze Prefecture, Nagqu Prefecture, Ngari Prefecture and Nyingchi Prefecture. Under the city level, there are still one district -Chengguan District, one county-level city - Xigaze, and 71 counties (including Chengguan District) in Tibet.
The Tibet Autonomous Region is the most sparsely populated region among all China's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. At the end of 2003, the total population in the Tibet Autonomous Region was 2.7million, a 32.9 thousand rise than that at the end of 2002. More than 2.5 million people were Tibetan people, accounting for 92.8% of the total population. There are only 2.21 people in every square kilometer in Tibet, 1/60 0f the national average.
